Wellington is New Zealand’s capital city, and has in recent years undergone a transformation into a lively and the country's most happening place. So much so that in 2010, the Lonely Planet Travel Guide described it “as the country’s most innovative and inspiring city might just be the ‘Best Little Capital in the World’.”
Most of the population either live in town or commute from the suburbs, the city is spread out around the harbour, surrounded by houses seemingly clinging to the lush green hills, and the city has more cafes, bars and restaurants per capita than New York.
With an established arts scene, extensive nightlife and cosmopolitan culture, Wellington is home to the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, the Royal New Zealand Ballet Company, the Wellington City Opera, Te Papa Museum, Wellington Zoo, New Zealand Cricket Museum, numerous cinema complexes and three professional theatres.

In line with Wellington being New Zealand's second largest city, there is an established social environment, with frequent opportunities to meet people from all walks of life. Because of this unique atmosphere, expatriates do not have trouble assimilating into the Wellington community. Opportunities to form closer-knit groups arise through children’s school activities and events, as well as through sports teams, sporting fixtures, and hobby or special interest groups.
