Moving to Hamilton

Moving to Hamilton

Built on the Waikato River, Hamilton is New Zealand’s fourth-largest city, just 90 minutes south of Auckland. Known as “the Tron” to its residents, it’s the commercial centre of a big, busy agricultural region, and a bit of the Goldilocks of New Zealand cities: not too big, not too small. You won’t find skyscrapers here (the tallest building is only 12 storeys), but the city still has plenty to offer: the river walkway, Hamilton Gardens, Waikato Stadium (one of the best grounds in the country) and more. With all that said, Hamilton’s true defining feature is its position. You can reach most of the upper North Island in under two hours, making it a great base for people who want to see everything New Zealand has to offer.

Crown Relocations has moved households into New Zealand for over 60 years, and our local team in Hamilton takes pride in helping new arrivals find both their footing and their new homes. Whether you’re settling in the city or the wider Waikato, they’ve got the skills to make your move a breeze. Read on for their first-hand advice on life in Hamilton, or get a free quote at any time.

Our Quoting and Moving Process

Crown’s quote process starts with a free consultation to understand your specific needs, access conditions and moving dates. After requesting a quote, one of our trained Crown consultants will survey your home in person or by video call, and assemble a list of the items that are going.

Your quote depends on two things: how much space your goods will take up, and what their final destination is. A door-to-door move finishes inside your new home, while a door-to-store move finishes at our Hamilton warehouse.

  1. Survey and quote
A consultant surveys your home, makes a list of what’s going where, and gives you a written quote, including an estimate of how long shipping will take.
  2. Decide what to bring
Next, it’s time to decide what’s worth shipping and what might be better to sell before the move. This is also when you should check for any items that can’t be imported into New Zealand.
  3. Professional packing
At your overseas address, our trained crew will securely pack your belongings for shipping and provide you with a detailed packing inventory.
  4. International freight
Your belongings are shipped by sea or air. While they’re in transit, you’ll be able to follow their progress through Crown’s tracking system.
  5. Customs and MPI clearance
Crown lodges the paperwork required to clear customs. Once your belongings arrive, the Ministry for Primary Industries will inspect them for biosecurity risks. Outdoor gear, garden tools, wooden items and anything carrying soil or seeds will get flagged, so make sure to clean these before packing.
  6. Storage in Hamilton, if needed
If your house isn’t ready, we can hold your goods in our secure Hamilton facility. If you know you’ll need storage ahead of time, it can be included in your quote, or arranged and billed separately later.
  7. Access check
Before the scheduled delivery date, the local crew will check the street, driveway and steps, so the right vehicles and personnel turn up.
  8. Delivery and unpacking
The big day! Our local crew will deliver your items to the rooms where they belong, and can also dispose of packaging and assemble furniture for you.

If your plans change mid-move, tell your coordinator as soon as possible.

How We Can Help You Settle Into Hamilton

The Crown team in Hamilton are locals, some of whom have lived here for decades. Here’s how they put it:
“[There’s a] strong Māori culture in the Waikato, while also embracing people from all over the world to live here. We are pretty low-key here and mostly it’s sweet as.”

Kiwis don’t tend to make a fuss, which new arrivals sometimes read as people being distant, but that understated attitude is just part of the culture. Getting out and about at weekends is easy too. As one Hamilton resident says:

“I have been to an All Blacks game at FMG Stadium Waikato, had an awesome time at the darts held at Claudelands (an event facility in Hamilton), been to Auckland for a concert and last weekend went to Coromandel to see whānau (family).”

Below, the team answers the questions we see new arrivals run into, plus what we at Crown can do to help.

How easy is it to get around Hamilton? Do we need a car, and does it matter where we live?

It’s not too hard to get around Hamilton, and where you live matters a lot less than somewhere like Auckland. At 5 pm, one of our team can cross half the city in 13 minutes, and get from Pukete to Hillcrest in about 30. Still, if you’re worried about location, try driving your potential commute or getting a feel for Hamilton’s public transport on our orientation tour.

While having a car is preferable, you don’t necessarily need one straight away. Cycling is a good option, because the city is really quite flat, and there are plenty of bus stops around. The Orbiter bus runs every 15 minutes around the main suburban centres, and you can use BUSIT to plan trips and check timetables. Where a car does matter is for getting out of the city. Trips out of town are one of Hamilton’s big draws, and that gets much trickier without a vehicle. If you have a vehicle overseas, get in touch with our friendly vehicle shipping people. If it isn’t worth bringing, they’ll tell you. Either way, here’s a quick list of places worth visiting:

LocationTime
Raglan (surf beach, west coast)45 minutes
Mount Maunganui / Tauranga (east coast beaches)90 minutes
Taupō (lake)2 hours
Ruapehu ski fields45 minutes past Taupō
Auckland (southern edge)About 90 minutes
Hobbiton and Waitomo Caves (film set / glow-worms)Under an hour
Coromandel (historic gold-mining town)Perfect weekend trip

We’re pretty sure it’s a legal requirement for all traffic to or from Auckland to stop at Pokeno for an old school ice cream. If you own a car, ask us about shipping your vehicle; if it isn’t worth bringing, we’ll tell you. An orientation tour drives your likely commute at peak, and your car can wait in vehicle storage until you’ve chosen a suburb.

Is Hamilton a good place for families?

Some think of Hamilton as boring, and that’s true, to an extent. Its proximity to Auckland limits the tourist draw, so it isn’t huge on attractions. For those who appreciate a quieter life, there’s still plenty on offer: a zoo, local parks, river walks and cycling trails, and the Hamilton Gardens, as well as numerous places nearby for day trips.

Education-wise, many schools use enrolment zones, which are tied to your home address. This creates a problem for families moving to Hamilton with children. Many families are still in temporary accommodation when the school year starts, meaning they don’t yet have a zoned address. Plan accordingly, and be aware that children may not be able to start school until after you sort out your housing.

Our school search programme is tailored to each family. Whatever your children’s needs, we can help find the right place for them to learn and grow. Have a dream school in mind, but not sure where to start? We’ll find housing options for you in its zone, giving your child the right to attend it. Learn more in our education guide.

What is the housing like?

Housing in the city is generally quite good: a mix of well-established suburbs with solid older builds, newer homes, and a growing supply of smaller homes at more affordable price points. Excluding the small-section builds, housing is generally more spacious than somewhere like Auckland. The north-east suburbs have seen a lot of development in recent years and are still expanding. There’s also a major new development called Peacocke to the south of the city, projected to house more than 20,000 residents in the future.

Most of Hamilton’s suburbs have something to offer if you know where to look, and you shouldn’t rule anywhere out on a first impression. That’s why you want our local team on your side. Once you’ve found a place, we recommend getting in touch with Fast Connect, a free service that can arrange your connection to essential services like electricity, gas and internet. If the container hasn’t arrived yet, our furniture hire service can make that in-between period less stressful.

How do newcomers meet people in Hamilton?

If you want to fast-track your way into local life, sport is the way to go, and Waikato Stadium is one of the best grounds in the country to watch a game. You can catch home games for our team, the Chiefs. They’ve got a habit of making the Super Rugby final and then losing it, but it’s still a good watch. Sport is popular with the kids as well. A member of our local team coaches an after-school sports team, and feels like they’ve met half the neighbourhood.

Hamilton also has a great op-shop scene, which somehow manages not to “feel op-shoppy”. These second-hand stores are a great place to stock up on everyday household items while you’re waiting for your belongings to arrive.

If you want to jump right in, try taking a tour to learn the ins and outs of the city. Alternatively, if you’re worried about fitting in, consider our intercultural support programme. Finally, see our advice on moving with kids.

What should we bring, and what should we leave behind?

Nothing in New Zealand is reliably cheaper to replace than to ship, and minimum shipping charges mean adding items isn’t especially costly. Unless you have a fixed-term post in the country, it’s often worth shipping more. If you know you might only be here for a shorter time, it may be worth storing some of your belongings in your country of origin. If you’re unsure about a given item, check how much it would cost (and how long it would take) to get a replacement in New Zealand.

Electronics labelled 100–240 V should work perfectly well on New Zealand’s 230 V network, but will likely need a plug adapter. Most other appliances will work with a power converter, but this can shorten the lifespan of both devices if the converter isn’t specced correctly. For larger appliances, it’s usually worth picking up new ones in New Zealand.

Outdoor gear, garden tools, wooden items and anything carrying soil or seeds will get flagged as possible biosecurity risks by the Ministry for Primary Industries. Make sure to clean these before packing, and declare them in all the relevant places.

Cars stand out as one of the trickiest things to decide on. Get in touch for our advice on shipping one versus buying in NZ. Finally, if you’re worried about anything happening to your belongings on their way over, check out Crown’s transit insurance.

How do we manage before our furniture arrives?

Sea freight takes weeks or months, which means your belongings are going to be out on the ocean for a while. You can race them if you want, using our global shipment tracker, but the odds are pretty solidly in your favour. If you have small, important items, consider bringing them with you on the plane.

Once you arrive, we can help you find somewhere furnished to stay temporarily while you search for a place to call home. If your shipment is still taking its time once you’ve found a more permanent home, we can provide rental furniture until it arrives. On the other hand, if the container arrives before you’ve found somewhere to settle, we can store it safely in our Hamilton warehouse.

FAQs for Moving to Hamilton

It depends on how much you’re shipping, where it’s coming from, and how easy your new home is to reach. Volume matters most. Sea freight is cheaper than air but slower, and a lifestyle block out of town with a long gravel drive, or a retirement village unit with set delivery hours, takes more planning than a suburban house. Storage, insurance, pet and vehicle transport are priced separately. The only accurate figure is a written quote from a survey of your home, which is free and comes with no obligation. Request one here.

Get your survey and quote done early, decide what you’re shipping versus selling or storing, and clean outdoor, garden and wooden items so they pass biosecurity inspection. Sort your visa and any paperwork your move manager asks for, and start pet or vehicle processes early as they run to their own timelines. On the Hamilton side, book furnished temporary accommodation for your first weeks. If you have school-age children, check school zones before you choose between Hamilton and towns like Cambridge or Te Awamutu, and contact schools about enrolment before you arrive. If you’re buying in a new subdivision, check the street is finished and has a confirmed address before delivery day.

Yes. Once your goods leave your overseas address, you can follow them through Crown’s shipment tracking system, and your move manager will keep you updated at each stage, including customs and MPI clearance when your goods arrive in New Zealand.

The biggest are how you ship, where from, how quickly your goods clear customs and MPI, and whether your Hamilton home is ready when they arrive.

  • Sea versus air.
Air arrives in days; sea in weeks. Most households ship the bulk by sea and fly a few essentials.
  • Shared or sole-use container.
A sole-use container leaves when packed. A shared container waits until full, which is cheaper but slower to start.
  • Origin and port of arrival.
Sailings are less frequent from some regions, and the shipping line, not your destination, decides which port your container comes in through. Hamilton has no seaport, so there’s always a road or rail leg once your goods clear, usually from Auckland or Tauranga.
  • Time of year.
Ports slow down around Christmas and New Year, and summer is the busiest time for moves around the Waikato, so delivery slots book up faster.
  • Customs and MPI.
Complete paperwork lodged in advance keeps this short. Missing documents, or goods that need cleaning or treatment, are the most common avoidable delay.
  • Access and readiness.
A long gravel drive, a farm gate or a retirement village’s delivery hours can change the vehicle we send; our access check catches this early. If your house isn’t ready, your goods go into our Hamilton storage, and redelivery needs seven working days’ notice.

Your move manager gives you a shipping estimate with your quote and keeps you updated as each stage clears.

They go into Crown’s secure Hamilton storage, charged weekly with no fixed-term contract. When you’re ready, give us seven working days’ notice and our local crew will deliver anywhere in Hamilton or the wider Waikato.

MPI inspects incoming household goods for anything that could carry pests, seeds or disease. The usual culprits are garden tools, outdoor furniture, camping gear, bikes, golf clubs, sports equipment, footwear with soil on it, wooden items, vacuum cleaners and natural plant or animal materials. If you’re moving to a lifestyle block, take extra care with equestrian gear, farm boots and machinery, which must be completely free of soil. Clean everything before packing and declare it on your inventory. Dirty items are cleaned or treated at your cost, or destroyed, and either delays your delivery.

Beyond the move itself, our Hamilton team can arrange home find and school search, storage, pet transport, vehicle shipping, transit insurance, utility connections, and a range of additional services such as sending money overseas. Contact our Hamilton branch with any questions about your move.
