About Queenstown

Queenstown is to be found towards the bottom of the south island, in Central Otago, and the town and the surrounding area are justifiably known as New Zealand’s adventure playground.

Queenstown is built around an inlet on Lake Wakatipu, and is blessed by truly spectacular views of the nearby mountains, the most famous and picturesque of which are The Remarkables.

A recent survey found Queenstown was home to some 220 adventure tourism activities, including bungy jumping, fly fishing jet boating, mountain biking, paragliding, skate-boarding, skiing, sky diving, snow-boarding, tramping and white-water rafting.

For a town of some 12,500 inhabitants, it attracts over two million visitors from around the world every year, and while Queenstown has received international recognition for its adventure sports, those looking for a quiet and refined lifestyle are also well suited, with the world-renowned Central Otago Pinot Noir grown locally, in whose vineyards form what is reputed to be the world’s southern-most wine producing region, and the TSS Earnslaw, a hundred-year-old steamship, plies Lake Wakatipu throughout the year. The town itself boasts an extensive choice of restaurants and excellent shopping. More details of the town can be found online

Within easy travelling distance of Queenstown are Arrowtown, Glenorchy, Kingston, Fiordland and Wanaka, all of which up make up the Central Otago region.

There are a number of types of visa that you may be eligible for when moving to New Zealand. Depending on the length of your stay or whether you plan to work, study or invest here.

Money in Queenstown

The New Zealand Dollar (NZD) is the local currency, and coins come in denominations of 10c, 20c, 50c, $1 and $2, with $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100 dollar notes.

When it comes time to convert your money to New Zealand dollars, it’s highly recommended that you do so via online transferal companies, as opposed to cash or travellers cheques. This is because banks are known to charge very high rates when dealing with these.

Crown recommends the services of OFX for converting your money online. People have been known to save hundreds, and sometimes thousands of dollars through this simple procedure. Visit  Moving your Money for more information.

Something else that could come in handy is opening up a New Zealand bank account before arriving in the country. This makes the transferal process of your converted money much easier and again minimises the extra costs that are commonly involved with this process.

There are a number of banks that offer easy, online sign up services, including; Westpac, Kiwibank and Bank of New Zealand.
