We’ve been Moving Kiwis around New Zealand and the world for over 60 years! When you choose to move with Crown you will find us to be more than a just a relocation company, we really care about what we do and how we do it!

Queenstown Movers

Crown has been NZ’s leading moving company for over 60 years. Since Crown is accustomed to lakeside and hillside areas, as well as long rural driveways and lifestyle and holiday homes, you can be confident we can handle whatever terrain a move involves. The bulk of our Queenstown work is household and retiree moves, so our furniture movers assess each job individually rather than working to a template.

If you’re booking with Crown for the summer peak months of December and January, aim for at least 6 to 8 weeks ahead, as slots fill fast at that time of year. Outside the peak, 3 to 4 weeks of notice is usually enough to lock your move in. If you have any urgent moves that are on short notice, you may still be accommodated depending on our booking capacity for your area.

How our moving process works

1. Free Quote & Consultation: Crown’s quote process starts with a free consultation to understand your home, your access conditions, moving dates, and any specific requirements. We give you a single clear quote so you’ll know the full moving cost before a single box is lifted.

2. Site Assessment: Queenstown has some unique characteristics that influence how moves are carried out. These include narrow streets, restricted access ways, central-city loading zones, steep driveways, and hilly street parking. Assessing these factors early on makes sure our Queenstown movers have the right crew, equipment, and size of vehicle needed.

3. Custom Moving Plan: Crown provides custom moving plans, catering for packing, transport, and timing. These plans are created with your specific needs in mind, whether you have hilly access or are optimising around student peak moving times.

4. Moving Day: Our Crown Queenstown crew keep moving day simple. We arrive on time, ready, and prepared. We make sure packing, loading, and transport goes smoothly, with a key focus on clear communication and keeping everything to schedule.

5. Delivery & Setup: Delivery includes careful unloading after your move, making sure each item is in the right place. We reassemble furniture and other items, with optional unpacking and putting things away, to make your move easy and stress free.

Planning this thoroughly in advance is what lets us keep moving day itself calm and predictable.

How Much Does It Cost to Move House in Queenstown?

The cost to move often depends on the volume, access, distance and timing. If you choose Crown as your house movers, you gain access to a free quote and consultation to assess everything beforehand. That way we can plan the move properly and spare you any hidden or last-minute costs.

Crown doesn’t charge for weather delays: if a truck has to park up overnight or wait out a road closure because of snow, you pay nothing extra because the move is planned out up front.

If you’re just looking to store items, our storage is usually quoted separately, though planned short-term storage may be included in the moving quote.

When Is the Best Time to Move in Queenstown?

Crown’s advice is to avoid moving in winter if you can. Ice and snow on the roads in and out of Queenstown are the main cause of delays and reschedules. December and January are our peak, so book 6 to 8 weeks ahead for a move in that window. Autumn and spring are quieter and often the best time to move to Queenstown, with better availability and lower weather risk than mid-winter.

What happens if it snows on moving day?

Crown prioritises the safety of your goods and our crew. If any roads are closed or conditions are unsafe for the move or transportation, you will be advised and the move or delivery will be rescheduled until the roads reopen and are safe. Trucks will park up safely and wait for the weather to clear rather than push through. We put health and safety ahead of the schedule.

Can Movers Handle Queenstown’s Hills and Steep Streets?

Yes, Crown can handle Queenstown’s hills and steep streets comfortably. We’re used to dealing with steep hillsides and lakeside suburbs like Fernhill and Kelvin Heights, as well as long, possibly unsealed rural roads around Lake Hayes, Gibbston and Dalefield. We’re also familiar with gated communities such as Jack’s Point and Millbrook, which have controlled access and where parking may be restricted. Steep driveways, narrow roads, tight corners and long carries are normal working conditions, not special exceptions.

Since we assess every move in advance, we can ensure that the correct vehicle and number of crew are sent, and nothing is left to be improvised on site. We also have measures for tricky access: extra staff rostered for long carries where the truck can’t get close, a tail lift for heavy items like pianos, and smaller vehicles for tight streets. We also check the state of the routes in, to make sure the site is reachable and the job is practical. All of this is assessed during the survey and priced into the quote, so there are no surprises on the day.

Should I Move Myself or Hire a Queenstown Moving Company?

Deciding whether to move yourself or hire a professional removalist depends on the type of move you’re intending to do. If it’s a small move like a bed or a few boxes, this may be a DIY job; however, if you’re intending to move large items like a piano, it’s best to leave it to professionals like Crown. You get professional standards, the tools and experience to reach even the steepest, hardest-to-get-to properties, and optional cover through CrownCare that goes beyond standard carrier liability.

If you’re set on doing a large move yourself, be aware of the hidden costs, which add up quickly: truck hire, fuel, time off work, and no cover if something breaks. To avoid them, choose Crown’s Queenstown moving company: New Zealand’s leading mover, with 60+ years of experience behind every job.

Can You Move Mountain Bikes and Other Specialist Items?

We take bike handling very seriously at Crown. For high-value bikes like mountain bikes, we remove the front wheel and pedals, wrap the frame to the international packing standard, and pack it into a bike carton. This is our standard method. For e-bikes, we can wrap, pack and move the frame; however, we do not store or relocate e-bike batteries, as they’re classified as dangerous goods.

We can handle other specialist items such as pianos or large exercise machines, which may need disassembly and reassembly. Every move is assessed on its own: the survey flags anything that needs handling beyond our usual method, rather than us working to a template.

Crown Relocations – Alexandra to Richmond Review
The packers worked very hard from the moment they arrived. Paul packed the kitchen all day & hardly had a break. He was always polite & cheerful. Mike & Dom arrived on the next day and packed & stowed all the furniture to the truck – not a particularly easy task and they never stopped working at all. We were very impressed by their work ethics. All of them are very pleasant & deserved commendation.

Moving Around Queenstown

Moving from Queenstown Across Central Otago and the Lakes

Crown covers the Queenstown-Lakes district and Central Otago region, including Wānaka and Arrowtown. That covers rural and lifestyle-block moves, including properties down long access roads or unsealed driveways. The main factors when moving from Queenstown are weather and occasional road closures; on inland routes like the Kawarau Gorge and Lindis Pass, winter conditions can force a reroute or a change of schedule.

Over that kind of distance, same-day uplift and delivery usually isn’t achievable, so an overnight run is normal. Distance is always built into the quote.

Queenstown to Wānaka Movers

The Queenstown-Wānaka run is one of the most common corridors Crown handles. Crown does not use the Crown Range road, as it’s not suitable for the trucks; instead, moves run via Cromwell and up SH6. Timing depends on access at both ends and the conditions on the day. The route takes in Wānaka, Albert Town and Lake Hāwea, along with the surrounding lifestyle blocks.
