Toronto is not the capital of Canada but with a population of over 2,600,000, Toronto is the biggest city in Canada. Located in the province of Southern Ontario on the north-western shore of Lake Ontario, one of the Great Lakes, Toronto really is a one of the world’s most diverse cities. A recent census showed some 50% of residents had been born outside of Canada, and whilst English is the main language spoken, the city remains proud of its French roots.

Modern-day Toronto is a centre for the arts, finance communications especially television production as the city houses the headquarters of Canada’s major national broadcast networks and media outlets. The city is well known for its skyscrapers and high-rise buildings, particularly the CN Tower, which at 553.3 metres, is the tallest free-standing structure in the Western Hemisphere. Toronto consistently rates as one of the world’s most liveable cities by the Economist Intelligence Unit and the Mercer Quality of Living Survey.

Niagara Falls rates as one of Toronto’s most famous attractions and is found just a short drive from Toronto. Other attractions of note include, Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada, a trip to the Tornoto Islands, the Royal Ontario Museum and Steam Whistle Brewery.

Visa / Permits in Toronto

New Zealanders need an Immigrant Visa to live in Canada, and details of how to obtain one can be found on the Canadian Government’s Visa and Immigration website.

Money in Toronto

The official currency of Canada is the CAD Dollar, and shops and service providers will only accept the CAD Dollar. Coins come in denominations of 1¢, 5¢, 10¢, 25¢, 50¢, $1 and $2 and notes in $5, $10, $20, $25, $50 and $100 bills.

Many migrants who have relocated to Toronto have found it helpful to set up a Canadian bank account before moving to the country. This makes it easy for converted money to be transferred straight in to your account, as well as minimising the need to carry cash while travelling. There are many banks in Toronto who offer an on-line sign-up service.

The best way to convert large sums of money is through online transfer companies, who provide a much cheaper rate. Transportation in Toronto

Toronto has an excellent public transport system, incorporating buses, streetcars and the subway, details of all these options can found at www.ttc.ca.

If you do choose to drive in Toronto, the first point to bear in mind is that in Canada, they drive on the opposite side of the road to that in New Zealand.

You can drive in Canada on a NZ drivers licence for up to three months, but it is recommended that you apply for an International Driver Permit. If you are staying in Canada permanently, you should apply for a Canadian driving licence.

Toronto Pearson International Airport is a major flights hub (www.torontopearson.com) and operates flights from some 75 airlines, to over 180 destinations not just within Canada, but around the world.

Education in Toronto

Toronto is home to six universities and over a 100 centres of higher education, combining to house approximately 187,000 undergraduate students across the city. In terms of the local schooling system, there are both private and public education services available for children in Toronto. The school year begins in September and ends in June.

Canada has an extensive public health-care system, called Medicare, but most people take out private insurance as well. If the insurance company you were with in New Zealand is a member of the International Federation of Health Funds, you may be able to transfer your policy to Canada without penalty – at a similar level of cover. Accommodation in Toronto

When choosing where to live in Toronto, the deciding factor for expats is normally how close you need to be to your work or your children’s school. The cost of accommodation and commuting to work are also significant considerations.

Rather than purchasing a home, most people moving to Toronto choose to rent, at least at first. This is because house (and apartment) prices in Toronto are very expensive.
