Listening to Our Customers: How Crown is Meeting Wellington’s Need for Innovative Storage

Are you finding your current premises or warehouse facility no longer meets your storage needs? Perhaps you are looking for a space with advanced seismic protection, a commitment to sustainability, and leading-edge climate and humidity control?

If so, you’re not alone – and a new solution is on the horizon for Wellington businesses! Recognising the need for more storage and upgraded facilities through our customers’ feedback, Crown Worldwide Group NZ has commenced construction of a new state-of-the-art build in Porirua.

This new Crown building is targeting a Green Star – Built rating. Green Star is an internationally recognised mark of sustainable building and reflects our commitment to sustainable business practices. Building our own facilities not only aligns with the company’s global property strategy, it also ensures we are better placed to meet ongoing customer and market demand for future-focused, secure facilities.

Award-winning architects Ashton Mitchell have designed the new building, having worked with Crown on previous projects.

The architectural design draws inspiration from the local Porirua landscape and placename.

Porirua’s name is derived from ‘Pari-rua’, which means ‘the tide sweeping up both reaches’.

This description perfectly describes the tidal water flowing in from Te Awarua-o-Porirua (Porirua Harbour) to both Pāuatahanui and Onepoto inlets, which are renowned for their scenic beauty and abundant wildlife.

Taking this concept of the two arms of Te Awarua-o-Porirua, Ashton Mitchell has overlaid this motif on the building design. This includes visual effects on the building exterior and specialised glazing on the east and north-facing windows. The glazing also references the idea of a tide dissipating as the waves wash up on the beach, becoming less intense as you move from the east facing windows to the north.

We’re just getting started, but the scheduled completion date of August 2026 will come around quick enough! This facility isn’t just about meeting today’s storage challenges – it’s designed to grow alongside our customers’ evolving needs for years to come.

Want to learn more about how this new facility will improve your logistics and storage needs? Look out for our next update as we take you on-site and reveal the cutting-edge technical specifications that make this facility unique in the Wellington region.

It’s going to be exciting to see the building develop throughout the year and into the next. We’ll keep you updated every step of the way.
