Crown Introduces New Recyclable Materials, Eliminating Polystyrene
Crown Worldwide Group (NZ) has introduced new recyclable packing solutions as part of our ongoing sustainability programme, with the aim of reducing reliance on polystyrene across key operations. These changes focus on improving consistency, practicality, and material use, while supporting a lower-impact approach to packaging.
At the centre of this update are two systems: the “Eco-Shield” packing solution and a redesigned range of Recyclable TV Cartons. Together, these introduce more structured and reusable alternatives to traditional materials, contributing to Crown’s broader efforts to reduce waste across its operations.
The “Eco-Shield” Packing System
The “Eco-Shield” system has been developed as a premium packing solution for high-value and fragile items, replacing traditional iFoam and iBubble materials with a more sustainable alternative.
Designed for consistency and ease of use, the system incorporates a cardboard carton paired with a structured internal padding system. This includes a base cushioning layer, a pre-cut perimeter liner, and additional mid- and top-layer padding to secure items in place.
The packing method follows a clear, repeatable process, ensuring reliability across crews and locations. This structured approach not only improves handling consistency but also simplifies training and execution.
A key feature of the system is its strong sustainability profile, with approximately 85% of materials derived from recycled sources. By eliminating polystyrene, the system significantly reduces non-recyclable waste while aligning with growing customer expectations for environmentally responsible services.
Driving Consistency, Quality, and Sustainability
The new system delivers several operational and customer benefits:
- Consistent, high-quality presentation for customers
- Reduced variability in packing methods across teams
- Simplified execution, making correct application easier in the field
- A compelling sustainability narrative, supporting Crown’s broader environmental commitments
To ensure effectiveness, Crown is implementing clear guidelines around usage. The “Eco-Shield” system will be positioned as a premium solution, with training and supervision reinforcing correct application. Early feedback from crews will play a key role in refining the rollout.
Redesigned TV Cartons: Reusable and Recyclable
Complementing the new packing system is the introduction of redesigned TV cartons, which further reduce reliance on polystyrene.
Available in two sizes (up to 55” and up to 75”), the cartons feature a telescopic design that allows them to adapt to different screen sizes. The system uses corner inserts and minimal internal materials, ensuring protection while reducing packaging waste.
A key innovation is the shift toward minimal taping, allowing cartons to be reused multiple times for domestic moves. Full taping remains an option for export shipments where additional security is required, balancing durability with sustainability.
Supporting Crown’s Sustainability Strategy
These innovations are part of Crown’s broader commitment to reducing its environmental footprint and advancing circular economy practices across its operations.
By eliminating polystyrene and increasing the use of recyclable and reusable materials, Crown is:
- Reducing landfill waste
- Lowering reliance on single-use plastics
- Supporting circular packaging solutions
- Strengthening its sustainability offering to customers
Looking Ahead
Crown will continue to refine and expand these initiatives, with a focus on scalability, operational efficiency, and measurable environmental impact.
The rollout of these new systems represents a significant step toward embedding sustainability into everyday operations while maintaining the highest standards of service delivery.
