Each family has different desires and requirements, but when moving with kids, there are some basic rules about what you need to look for in an area ie. reputable schools, plenty of kid-friendly activities, an abundance of outdoor activities, proximity to conveniences, low crime rate and other factors.

Read on to find out more about the top six Chicago neighbourhoods that stand out as the best for raising families…

Beverly

If you like historic architecture then Beverly could be the place for you. It’s a vibrant and friendly community located just 30 minutes south of Chicago’s city centre. Affordable property can be found here, often with beautiful enclosed yards, perfect for letting your kids play outside and summer barbequing. If you’re looking for a good, highly-rated public school, search for Sutherland Elementary School.

There is always something available for kids to do in Beverly. If your kids enjoy the arts, music, theatre or dance and performances, The Beverly Arts Center is the place to visit or even join up for classes, summer camps and a host of other activities.

Edison park

Quality schools are not hard to find here. The public schools in Edison Park are above the national average. There are also a number of private schools ranging from preschools to high schools in nearby proximity to choose from. If you want to be closer to the heart of the city, Bucktown is the perfect choice. It maintains an ideal balance between urban life and suburban comfort.

Living in Bucktown means all the conveniences are at your doorstep. There are dining and entertainment options that will keep both the young and old happy. However, property can be a little pricey in this neighbourhood. When looking for a home, search for a yard on a quieter side street – the city amenities will still be just a few blocks away.

Bucktown residents can choose between six public schools and several preparatory schools. Your kids will love small parks in this area, as well as Bloomingdale Trail, a greenway that runs through the neighbourhood.

Bucktown will have pleasant surprises and events for every member of your family.

Lincoln Park

Lincoln Park is a very safe and quiet area with lots of outdoor space and beautiful lake views. There are plenty of local attractions and activities which makes this place one of the top Chicago neighbourhoods for families. The lakefront trail and stunning beaches are perfect for unwinding.

Lincoln Park Zoo would be a hit for your kids. It is one of America’s oldest zoos and home to over 1,000 animals from nearly 200 different species. You’ll also find many indoor play areas to keep your kids engaged such as Kids City and Kids Science Lab.

You’ll never run out of options when dining out. Family-friendly restaurants are aplenty here but be sure to visit the most kid-friendly, Chicago-famous restaurant named RJ Grunts, it’s just a short stroll from the zoo.

If you’re up for some shopping, head to Armitage Avenue’s boutiques and high-end stores. There are also plenty of night happenings, from stand-up comedies to theatre performances.

West Loop

West Loop has it all. It is perfectly located – close to downtown and close to the expressways. In the last years, West Loop has become one of the most expensive neighbourhoods in the city, but you’ll find beautiful houses or luxury condos to suit your lifestyle.

This neighbourhood is also a mecca for food! There is a particular stretch of Randolph Street known as Restaurant Row where you’ll find many celebrated eating hot-spots, one you wouldn’t want to miss out if you’re there. Take your kids and check out J.P. Graziano for delicious Italian meats as well as sandwiches. The Chicago French Market is also not to be missed. Randolph Street Market Festival is the highlight at summertime for the whole family to enjoy.

In the weekend, head to Northerly Island for some fun family activities, such as hiking and fishing. You’ll also be able to enjoy live music and beautiful water views there. Mary Bartelme Park boasts a 2.71 acres park with fantastic play area for kids (and a special area for dogs too). A six-foot high viewing hill provides a fantastic lookout of the entire park with the stunning Chicago skyline as backdrop. The green space at Grant Park hosts various community activities, so check them out if you want to meet some friendly locals and get to know the neighbourhood as you settle in the area. Punch Bowl Social is the meet-up place for bowling, karaoke, and vintage arcade games.

West Loop is safe for families, conveniently located, and has outstanding schools and opportunities for daycare.

Edgewater

Edgewater is a picturesque neighbourhood near Lake Michigan. It has some of the most affordable apartments in the area, low crime rates, and plenty of parks.

From here, you can take a day trip to Osterman Beach and enjoy the sun, sand, and water sports. If your kids love water activities, check out Chicago River Canoe and Kayaking. In the wintertime, head to Broadway Armory Park – Chicago’s largest indoor recreation facility.
