NZ Migration Trends to Europe

The current statistics provided by Stats NZ, show that as of January 2024, there were around 123,300 New Zealanders leaving the country over the past year. This is an increase of 30 per cent compared to the previous year and the highest number on record for any 12-month period.

Many of these people decide to migrate to Europe for various reasons. As New Zealand has a strong relationship with many European countries, migration is made quite easy for many people who may want to explore their European ancestry.

Travel around Europe is quite easy, so those looking for adventure and the ability to explore new places and cultures find it quite enticing to move to a European country.

New Zealand also has a strong relationship with the EU and all of its 27 Member States. This means that New Zealand citizens can actually visit any of these countries without a visa as long as their stay is less than 90 days.

But, if New Zealanders want to migrate to one of the Schengen Area countries, they’ll need to apply for the relevant Schengen visa.

What entices New Zealanders to migrate to different European countries?

Moving to Spain

Spain is one of the world’s top holiday destinations in Europe. It features culturally rich cities, miles and miles of sandy beaches and a lower cost of living compared to many other countries.

Moving to Italy

Many New Zealanders will have an ancestral connection with Italy. The country is steeped in art, culture and history. Its people are very welcoming and it’s a relatively affordable place to live.

Moving to Germany

Germany’s economy is one of the strongest in the world and the country has a high-quality education system that’s geared toward both literature and music. Germany is also the ideal location if you’re pursuing a career in IT, research and science or construction.

Moving to Netherlands

Moving to the Netherlands is not difficult if you’ve already found a job there or are a highly qualified professional. It’s relatively easy to get a residence permit once you have a job. The Netherlands also encourages investors to relocate with its investor visa.
